Day 5

Mostly this is to catch up on the photos.  A few more comments though.

We are in Niagara Falls - an oddball sort of an rv park - found it at dark - had seen it on the web - office closed - fill in the paperwork and see them in the morning sort of thing.  We chose a tent site.  There is some large roaring noise in the background that I don't think is the falls.  Some awful power something or other?  Large rvs keep pulling in.  But we have wifi!

It was rainy so we decided to put miles behind us and didn't see too much this afternoon.  Passed over the Erie canal many times.  Got hopelessly, well not quite because here we are, lost in Rochester.  The only time we've been east since we left.  We did get turned around finally.  Took 490 to blast out of Rochester and then nice secondary roads right to Niagara.  Saw more farm land - I didn't mention before that we've seen quite a lot of soy beans.  I suspect, but don't know, that they've been treated somehow to kill the foliage.  They look perfectly dry and completely dead.  Have seen a combine or two.  More apples today and more corn land.

We still see wishing wells but they aren't quite so common.  For a while around the Old MacDonald region decrepit farm machinery was the rage for lawn decoration.  A rusting, repainted sprayer, horse drawn this and that.  With a little garden with bark mulch around and a pumpkin and a mum or two.  Lots of Halloween decorations - cobwebs abound.  People are also very fond of lighthouses and windmills for ornaments.  We'll try to get some pictures.  We can't wait to see how the folks in Ontario decorate their lawns.  There has to be a thesis in this topic somewhere.  Things like income, religion, community, must play a part.

Sam is working on his first language arts assignment - take note Twinfield students and teachers - he's not totally on vacation.  In fact he did a fantastic job yesterday and today following the map and getting us where we needed to go.  Otherwise I would have to stop, write it out, keep it in one hand with my glasses perched on my nose and looking over them to drive...  This is much better.

We are in the part of NY that makes me think of Joanne.  Some of you know her.  She can imitate the Rochester accent perfectly.  I want to laugh when I hear it because I can't believe they aren't making it up.  It seems to mostly involve A.  I don't think I can spell how it sounds.  But it's flat and nasal.  Like flat.  Fla-at.  Almost another syllable added.  O gets it too.  Hot is Haat.  Pinched and nasal.  I don't know what the influence is that makes it sound that way.

We went to a lovely diner in Newark today.  The Newark Diner.  A real one.  With the real people running it.  Older man and his wife - he cooking.  Decorated with old Betty Boop things.  And a signed photo of some of the cast from the soap opera 'General Hospital' who did an on location episode or two there a long time ago.  Good home fries and an omelet.

For Bella (new grand niece.)
'Bite people' - is the rest of the sign.

The aged cow.  17.  A lot of calves too - I forget how many.
Black ear, white eye, black eye, white ear.  Highly entertaining.
Don't worry, we have pictures of him in all the faces - just spared you.
Always a scary sight - like a cauldron.
The bluffs - trying a new caption option here.
Beautiful, soft, smooth stones on the beach.  These are about 1-2 inches.

Need to know more about this place - razor sharp edges and it's sediment, not stone.
So far the trusty van has been good.  Held its own in Rochester, blasting along 490.  This was our campsite last night - vegetable fields in the background.  Very quite.  Very fun to see Ruth and to meet Ammie and so nice to go to the interns' house for a shower and to do dishes.  Got some good fresh vegetables too.  Met some nice people.  It is a CSA (vegetable shares) so today was a share day and some people work off part of their share by helping to pick and pack.
